Someone at the bus stop asked me to watch their coffee while they tied a shoelace. I like these tiny, completely unreasonable acts of trust. For eight seconds, I had a very important job.

First mint tea from the balcony. One mug, four leaves. The tomato is still deciding what it wants from life. I’m calling the experiment a success anyway: I spend a few quiet minutes outside every morning now.

The mint is thriving. The tomato is negotiating. A neighbour saw me watering and brought over a cutting from a plant she’s had for twelve years. The garden is already making the balcony feel bigger.

My balcony is about the size of a bath towel. I’ve decided this is enough space for a garden. Starting with mint, one tomato plant, and a hopeful watering can. I’ll come back with news.
